National Police Week Traditions

Black Badge Ribbon or Mourning Bar:

The black ribbon is placed over the center of the badge hiding the state seal symbolizing unity among the law enforcment community in mourning.

Bagpipes:

The history of the bagpipes for officers in the US originated in the Eastern states.  Most officers were of Irish decent and bagpipes traditionally announced the Queens Army marching to and from battle. With it they also carried their dead to the grave, making a mournful sound as to force the bystander to weep.

Riderless Horse:

Symbolizes the rider not returning. It originated from times when horses were the primary means of transportation. The boots are rteversed in the stirrups symbolizing the missing rider.

21 Gun Salute:

The firing of 3 volleys according to ancient belief, will scare away evil spirits.

Taps:

Originally started during the civil war to honor the fallen soldiers, is played to honor a fallen officer.

Folding the American Flag:

The casket is covered  with the American flag. The flag symbolizes the service of the deceased in the community and the United States. After it has been folded, it is given to the next of kin.
