City of Harvard Building and Zoning Department Procedures for Obtaining a Building Permit

Permit required
A permit shall be obtained before beginning construction, alteration or repairs, other than ordinary repairs, using application forms furnished by the Building Department. Ordinary repairs are nonstructural repairs and do not include addition to, alteration of, or replacement or relocation of water supply, sewer, gas. waste, vent or similar piping, electrical wiring, or mechanical or other work for which a permit is required by the Building official.

Permit Application
Any owner, contractor, or other authorized agent who Desires to obtain a permit shall first make application to the Building Official.

Information Required
Each application for a permit shall be filed with the Building Official on a form furnished for that purpose. The application shall be signed by the owner or his authorized agent. The building permit application shall include a general description of the proposed work, including a detailed site plan, recent survey and such other information as required by the building official.

Plans Required
Plans shall be drawn to scale and be of sufficient clarity to Indicate the nature and the extent of the work proposed and shall show in detail that it will conform to the provisions of the building codes and all relevant laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. Plans shall include a survey showing the location of all easements, drainage facilities, adjacent grades, property lines, proposed building and of every existing building on the property. The design loads shall be clearly indicated on the plans.

Decks, Fences, Sheds, Drives, Pools, Interior Remodeling and Other Misc. Improvements
A rough sketch to scale along with a recent survey of property will be sufficient for these improvements. For decks and sheds in excess of 100 square feet, plans will be required.
