Officer Dean Burton #318 - Officer of the Year 2013

Dean's Award

November 29, 2013

I, Chief Dan Kazy-Garey of the Harvard Police Department nominate Officer Dean Burton for the award of McHenry County Officer of The Year 2013. His actions exemplify one of the reasons each and every one of us commit to our communities and return day in day out to serve.

On May 15, 2013 Off. Dean Burton responded to an unknown medical problem at the Harvard Junior High School located at 1301 Garfield Rd. Off. Burton located a male, 14 yoa student near the soccer fields lying on his back. The student was not breathing and unresponsive. Off. Burton assessed the student and initiated CPR. The student’s pulse returned and he began breathing. The student was transported to Harvard Mercy Hospital. It was later learned that the student had a pre-existing heart condition and a defibrillator. The Harvard PD was subsequently advised by medical staff that Off. Burton’s actions saved the students life. The student subsequently recovered. Off. Burton’s actions support the Department’s Mission, creates a positive image of the Harvard Police Department and the City of Harvard by perpetuating the City of Harvard motto, “Winning with Teamwork”.

I subsequently awarded Off. Burton Commendation on June 25, 2013 for his actions.
