School Resource Officer

School Resource Officer or "SRO" for short, is a program involving the placement of a uniformed law enforcement officer within the school system at all grade levels. It is designed to bridge the gap between police and young people. Its' purpose is to increase a positive attitude toward the police, as well as reduce juvenile crime by helping students' awareness of the rules, authority, and justice. The School Resource Officer is involved in a variety of functions. He is a visible, active law enforcement figure on campus dealing with law related issues. He provides instruction in law-related education, violence diffusion, safety programs, and alcohol and drug prevention. He is a member of the faculty and works with school administration to solve problems in the school. He is a resource to students, parents and teachers.

The DARE program has been discontinued.  The replacement program is called  "A.D.A.P.T.S" and stands for Awareness of Drug and Alcohol abuse Promoting Teen Safety.   Topics of the program include, Stranger Danger, Status Offense Education; drug, alcohol, curfew, Internet Safety, and driving information.  The SRO spends about 30%  of his day on Law Enforcement, 30% on Guest Speaking, and 40% on informal counseling. Our current SRO is Officer Ed Kohn. He can be contacted by calling the Harvard Police Department or E-Mail at  kohn@cityofharvard.org
